Canvas for Distributed Leadership

Moving from me to we. Are you leading a group, coalition, network, or nonprofit? Are you feeling lonely in leadership? This planning canvas is designed to help you think through primary pieces of what you hold as a leader and plan for sharing responsibility across your team(s).

Planning Tool +

Quick Guide

This planning tool + quick guide was created for the State of Alaska’s prevention grantees, but will be useful to anyone leading a multi-stakeholder initiative. The tool will guide you through

  • pre-conditions for changing the way the initiative is led
  • attributes and skills of leadership across team(s)
  • the structure – roles, teams, and decision-making- required to best support a distributed leadership style
  • commitments and expectations of the team for themselves and others
  • and communication, both internal and external, to ensure that distributed leadership is shared across teams and among all stakeholders.

The Distributed Leadership Planning Canvas provides guiding questions for leaders and teams to work through.

This planning canvas is meant to empower leaders to plan for change. Since leadership can be lonely and lots of folks feel like the weight of success sits squarely on their shoulders, this canvas, whether you adopt distributed leadership or not, may also help delegate leadership, so no one person feels like they have to carry it all themselves.
